Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Capt. Bob LeMay

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing this week has been very good in the interior out of Flamingo. This has been a very mild fall and early winter here with only two nights of relatively cool temperatures since October. As a result we've seen an early influx of giant tarpon in Whitewater Bay but they seem to disappear the moment it begins to get cold at night... My last booking was a few days ago now. Local angler Ron Patella and visitor Jay Bishop each scored a backcountry slam with good sized snook, trout, and small redfish. Soft plastic lures are working well for us since everything we've thrown them at has jumped on them. We also managed to catch and release a few small bull sharks up to around 70lbs and one sawfish that we estimated to be around 7 feet long. As usual with sawfish an angler has his (or her) hands full and never sees the fish until it's right at the boat. Your first indication is when the fish is at the boat and waving that dangerous bill at you... Since they're a protected specie we carefully release them without taking them out of the water. Actually, they are now on the endangered specie list. The Everglades is the only place that I know of that still has lots of them.

The rest of this week the weather should continue mild with high 60's at night and low 80's during the day. With relatively stable weather the fishing should be good this weekend
