Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Finally the water temperatures are where they should be for this time of year and the fishing has turned on like someone flipped a switch... The giant tarpon are making a strong showing in the interior now and anglers I've spoken with that have been fishing Florida Bay and nearby shorelines are doing really well with redfish and snook. Fishing in these areas should get better every day now...

Yesterday I fished two skilled anglers who were on their first trip to the 'Glades. Capt.Davenport West, a professional blue water tournament mate, and Dave Cook, a former steelhead and trout guide from the Northwest. Dave was looking for his first tarpon on fly and we hit it just right. Using an 11wt. fly rod, Dave hooked a fish of at least 100lbs in the interior and the fight was on... About 35 minutes later he had his first big tarpon at boatside for photos and a release. We went on to jump two more on spinning gear, then it was Davenport's turn on the fly rod. We worked for about an hour with only one bite where I believe the fish actually missed the fly then we spotted one that was really close to the skiff. A quick short cast, the fly allowed to sink, then two strips before the bite.... When the line came tight the leader was actually in the tip of the rod. It was a big fish, we estimated it at over 125lbs as it cleared the water right next to the boat.... Fortunately the fish broke off on that first jump. I say fortunately since I think the second jump might have been in the boat.... Not a good prospect. Although we didn't hook another, the big fish stayed on in one area all day and we had lots of shots. Tarpon heaven! I'll be back after them shortly.
