Everglades National Park - Flamingo

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

This past week has been a lot more like July than March with high temps and humidity every day. The fish are loving it, and so am I....

Big tarpon have been the story for my anglers almost every day. Early last week local angler Jake Talmage hooked three tarpon on fly, the biggest was around 100lbs. Two of the fish released themselves in short order. The third, estimated at more than 60lbs, stayed hooked and was released at boatside after a photo or two. That day the fish were hungry enough that one tried to eat the tip of Jake's fly rod while he was stripping the fly back to the boat. He quickly snatched the rod away from the fish to avoid losing the end of it... A day or two later Dr. Josh Luce and his son Austin teamed up to get one of around 70lbs. They also caught and released speckled trout, grouper, a jewfish, and a variety of other species during the day.

The best catch of the week went to Ivana Gudat, fishing with her dad, Willi. At age 13 she's already caught her first sailfish, but had never even hooked a tarpon. We cured that in fine fashion late on Saturday afternoon. She hooked and fought a big tarpon along the coast in windy conditions using spinning tackle. Although the fish was a lot bigger than her she stuck with it and boated a fish we estimated at 110lbs with a little help from her dad. After a photo or two the big fish was released in good condition. An outstanding catch for any angler, she did a tremendous job.

Being on the water day after day means using days off to repair, re-fit, and if possible make improvements to fishing tackle and the skiff that's getting hard use. I've just finished replacing the seating on my old Maverick with folding Navistyle seats from Tempress. They were simple to install and are top quality. It will be nice to have a backrest for a change. Of course, it's only my anglers who are getting older, not me.... I'm not the first guide to install them. I imagine they'll be on a lot more boats in the future.
