Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The fishing this week has been all about variety from inside out to the Gulf coast. This was also a week with a few surprises, a small jewfish (goliath grouper) on fly, a large (almost 90lbs) blacktip shark in Whitewater Bay, more than a few keeper sized grouper -both inside and out on the coast....
There have also been a few notable changes at Flamingo itself. As of this week the outside boat ramp (the Florida Bay side) is now closed for a few months while it gets dredged out after Wilma filled it with sediment. That means I'm seeing lots of folks at the inside ramp that don't normally show up there.... It also may have contributed to the number of anglers that just happen to start fishing nearby whenever I stop to work a spot... time to do a disappearing act. The problem only seems to occur on weekends. During the week we hardly ever see another boat anywhere.
Bait is now plentiful everywhere, both inside and out. Surprisingly, most of our better fish have come using lures... All that's needed now for a really good bite is for the long awaited spring rains to flush inside fish out to the coast. Of course a week or so after the rain starts the mosquitoes will show up. The next few days I'll be dividing my time between Flamingo and Everglades City. Redfish and snook will be our primary targets each day with small tarpon a bonus. It's that time of year.
