Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The interior and Gulf coast out of Flamingo is very good now. The weather and mosquitoes discourage many, and that's left most spots to a very few anglers.... On Thursday Earl Zagrodnik from Utah brought his fly rods and struck gold... a backcountry grand slam on a light fly rod. He started off the day with baby tarpon, then went on to catch and release snook, redfish, and speckled trout. Most were on a small popping bug that was just about an inch and a half in length, the hook is just a #1... and everything's eating it. The one fish we didn't catch on a popper was a nice redfish..which just had to have a backcountry clouser.
Right now the Gulf coast has a lot going for it on a falling tide. Almost any shoreline with some current has fish just inside and in front of any creek, river, or tributary along wild mangrove shorelines - particularly if there's some downed trees in the water. A few days later we really took advantage of that...
My last outing this week was yesterday with local anglers Charles Foschini and Bob Davis and the gear was light spin and plug casting gear with nothing but artificials. Although the action was a bit slow at first (three out of our first four spots were dry...), once we got out on the coast and the tide started falling, it really turned on. The hot lures were either Skitterwalks for surface action or bottom bouncing with Gulp shrimp or bucktails. The snook were on fire... Charles started off with a slot sized fish on the top and, while he was hooked up, Bob got jumped by a much bigger fish. Before we released the first snook, Bob's big fish came up for a quick photo, posed for one last shot, then back in the water to re-join her friends... Both anglers went on to catch and release another few slot sized fish, then we had to move since bad weather was boiling in. Once the weather cleared a bit, we were back in action with another really nice fish for Bob at another river mouth. At 33" it was a bit smaller than his first big fish which measured 35". We went on to catch and release nice sized snook at other spots until the day was done. Our last, late in the day again was to a topwater lure.. It's kind of an understatement, "I think they were hungry!"
To top things off this week the tides are right for the night action in Biscayne Bay for anyone wanting to tangle with a few small tarpon.
