Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
The past week or so a fairly predictable late summer pattern has had my anglers in snook, trout, redfish, and a few tarpon - all on lures or flies. Along with them are the always present hungry sharks... when you hook a redfish and it starts jumping (reds don't jump much....) you can bet something's trying to eat it. On those days when I haven't had a booking, I've been filling fly orders, and repairing gear. I did manage to take one day to fish the falling tide out of Everglades City south down to Lostman's River. We found lots of small snook and some healthy goliath grouper on lures at river and creek mouths. It was a fun day exploring and learning a bit.
Out of Flamingo, we've had pretty consistent action and two backcountry slams in the same day, a father and son team from Minnesota. Along the way some larger mangrove snapper have been attacking surface lures meant for snook. Most days we've rarely seen even one other boat, either in the interior or out on the Gulf coast, which suits me just fine. Two pleasant surprises recently - the scarcity of mosquitoes at the boat ramp (most unusual) and the return of the first school of big tarpon (no we didn't manage to hook up...). Every day now the interior baby tarpon fishing with popping bugs has been a staple. They're biting, morning, noon, and night. Two days ago we had them biting in 90 degree water late in the afternoon - hungry fish.
