Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

022912
I am fishing with the Wegnar brothers today Bob, Ken and Ron at Flamingo. I started out in Whitewater Bay and the first few spot were not productive, we made it up to a Trout spot and got into them really good. On every cast at least 2 of 3 guys were hooked up with keeper size Trout jack or ladyfish. This was a good warm up but Bob wanted Tarpon for his visiting brothers. I ran around looking for Tarpon and eventually found them on the coast but they were scattered and not eating, the winds picked up and made it difficult to see them.

We had some live mullet which we put to work and had a couple big Shark bites and then what I think was a big Snook. This fish wrapped around a tree which Ron and Ken pulled out of the water and much as they could. It was a 30 foot tree and they pulled it out about 20, enough that we could see the how the line was wrapped and twisted around all the branches. We could feel the fish and we tried but eventually broke it off. While all this was going on Ron had a nice Redfish which we landed. We made a couple stops for Tarpon but the winds were @ 25 mph and it was tough. I said lets go I got one more spot to hit on the way in, I rigged a couple mullet and after 20 minutes or so Ken was hooked up to a big Shark. He fought it for 15 minutes and the fish broke off. We called it was late.

I am part of a 2 boat trip this afternoon out of Haulover, I have Brian, his dad Bill and Greg from Connecticut. We started out casting lures on some diving birds in the bay, we caught a bunch of Bluefish, Jacks and Ladyfish. I had a live Mullet drifting off the back looking for Tarpon. The closest we got to a Tarpon was a free jumper which on thefirst jump was 20 feet from the boat. On the second leap it almost ended up in the boat, leaping right into the side of the hull, this was very cool. I have had them close before but have never hit the boat. If that Tarpon got in the boat we would of been in trouble, it was every bit of 150 lbs. A green fish like that would of destroyed my boat and possible hurt someone. It was cool and the guys talked about it all night. We made our way out to the beach and set up a drift, for 2 1/2 hours we drifted and talked but no Tarpon tonight.

We are getting a cold front passing today 030412. We really needed it we have beed in the upper 80's all week and I think the fish get confused as far as the seasonal conditions. We are at the start of Tarpon either on Miami Beach or down at Flamingo, so if its Tarpon you want the next 3 months are key.
If I can help give me a call at 305 333 8149,
Captain Jimbo
