Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend especially on the water. After Tropical Storm Isaac came through, I spent time this week in all parts of the Florida Everglades. Whether it's been down in the Southern part out of Flamingo or on the Western side out of Everglades City, we've been fishing pretty hard. We also mixed in a day of bass fishing in some tough access areas on the freshwater side of the Glades.
Sight fishing down in the Flamingo has still remained strong with the opportunity to catch tarpon, redfish, trout, and snook on fly. We had a great summer of redfishing up on the flats with easily 75 to 100 shots a day and continue to lead the pack in that category as we move towards the fall. It seems that the baby tarpon and snook are coming back strong from the 2010 freeze, and those fish complimented the exceptional red fishing that we have been experiencing.
Anglers fish with me out of my Maverick HPX-Micro and I can tell you that you cannot find water shallow enough for this skiff. It is easy on the pole and fits the needs for redfishing out of Flamingo perfectly. There were times this summer where redfish had their entire backs out of the water milling around and we were able to get shots on these fish in the HPX-Micro.
On Saturday we put in at the Rod and Gun Club, one of my favorite places in Everglades City, and caught the last part of the outgoing tide around the islands. We pounded the shoreline of some outer islands where bait was present and managed to pull out some decent snook while throwing a small baitfish pattern fly. A well placed presentation underneath the mangroves with some bait and fallen trees in the water typically resulted in a hook up or a swing and miss. As the tide changed and started coming in, we made our trek down south. Water was still a little murky from Tropical Storm Isaac, but we did manage to sight fish a few reds.
Normally, in the spring and early summer the bass bite on topwater poppers in the Glades is on fire. We never really had that bite this year due to the high water levels. So I have been fishing some tough access areas out of a canoe and finding a high number of largemouth and peacock bass willing to blow up any type of topwater popper. I have guided a few trips out of the canoe and have had some rewarding days of bass on fly. On Monday, I decided to scout around by myself in the canoe. I threw a few #4 poppers with a 6wt and had some really awesome bites.
