Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The summer fishing in the Flamingo area has been very good with incredible bites occuring on specific moon and tidal stages. The Snook were very active for the past 6 weeks on the beaches and shorelines and are focusing on large live baits and my guests have also picked up a few big females on cut ladyfish and mullet heads while Tarpon and Shark fishing in the passes. I have been on a pretty steady catch of large over slot Redfish and is truly a breath of fresh air in comparison to the 4-5 lb Snake Bight Specials. Lots of big Sharks are in the same areas as the Snook and Trout and have been chasing fish to the boat left and right so be aware when landing your catch. The Sharks have been primarily large Blacktips but some monster Bull Sharks have been present as well. This time of year I always use larger 15-20 lb class rods and 5000-6000 series spinning reels in order to ensure not only the healthy release of a spawning Snook but to increase the chances of my anglers landing there trophy catch. Among the awesome catch and release fishing for Snook and big Redfish has been an overlooked species that only a few captains are actually capitalizing on, The Sawfish. These fish are making incredible comebacks from Flamingo to Islamorada and have been very active in the deeper passes of the Flamingo area all the way up to Shark River. A butterflied Mullet or Ladyfish on the bottom will almost guarantee you a strike from a Shark, Sawfish or even a big Tarpon. Always a great activity for the mid day periods when the hot water temperature slows down the bite for the inshore gamefish.

Fishing will remain hot through the summer months and hopefully the winds will lay down so we can enjoy the true summer pattern instead of the recent 15-20 mph winds out of the southeast.
