Spring break

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

030410

I am with Mike and Gary on this breezy cool mid afternoon. We started out trolling some plugs in the inter coastal and had some big hit right away. On the first pass we had a double on 5 lb Jacks, the next was another Jack and a 5 lb. Bluefish. We were trolling thru a bridge which has a big drop and it holds allot of bait. We got the rods set up again and this time the bite was different it ended up being a 22 inch Black Grouper, my first there. After one more pass and another double hook up on Jacks we headed for the beach. The NW wind was keeping it flat so we would drift out away from the beach. We set out the rods and started our drift, Mike spotted a rolling Tarpon and then we saw another. Right about the that time our rod doubled over and Gary was hooked up with his first Tarpon, a 40 pounder. Gary fought it on a 12 lb. spinning rod for about 15 minutes and brought it boat side for pictures and a good release. We fished for all of 2 hours and they had to go.

I am with Brent and John and it is cold this morning, as as we motored out of Haulover inlet there was steam on the water. We ran down to Government Cut and Brent got busy pretty quick catching a bunch of Groupers real quick. The Snappers,Blue runners, Grunts and Jacks kept them busy. John screamed and was holding on to his rod. The fish stayed deep and didn't run reel far which made me think he had a decent grouper, until the line came straight out and the Tarpon Jumped. John had the lightest rod in the boat and did a great job, he fought the fish for 30 minutes and eventually got it boat side for some photos. John had been wondering what he was doing wrong because Brent had caught most of the fish before this. We started another drift and John hooked up again, almost the same fight with the exception of the fish being a 60 pound Tarpon this time. John fought the Tarpon on the same 10 lb. rof and although it took longer this time we landed this one too. Brent was now wondering what he was doing wrong, it was kind of comical but I think we have all been there. These guys had only had the morning to fish and had to catch a flight out so we headed back.

I am with Dan and his son Lucas looking for Tarpon today, it is still cold and breezy. We fished hard all day and caught Groupers, Snappers and Jacks but could not get the tarpon to play.

I am fishing with Dan today, we started out throwing a fly where we saw some rolling Tarpon but it wasn't happening. I suggested we run into the cut and try a shrimp on a jig, Dan agreed. While we were casting at rolling fish, one of the other boats had caught several fish in the cut. It didn't take long and Dan started getting hook ups but no Tarpon. He caught a 12 lb Jack, Dog Snapper, Yellowtails, Mangrove Snappers, Black and Red Groupers, Barracuda and eventually 1 for 5 on Tarpon.

I am doing a 3 boat trip out of Key Biscayne today and I headed to Government Cut. I had Bob and Tobelli, it was nasty when were got there and the Tarpon weren't rolling. We made some drifts and caught a Black grouper and a Grunt. I tried to stick it out for Tarpon but they were a little bit late and we only had a couple hours. I ran to a dock and we caught 7 or 8 15 inch Mangrove Snappers and a Barracuda.

Warmer days are hopefully coming this month, the Tarpon bite will continue thru June off of South Beach and expect a push off bait soon which will bring us some great action.

If a day of catching numerous species with a possibility of a 100 lb tarpon thrown in get your blood pumping give me a call at 305 333 8149.
