Springing into Summer

Capt. Ariel Cabrera
May 15, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

We are now officially springing into summer. And it sure feels like it. The snook, redfish, tarpon have been very comfortable with the warm water temperatures. The other big "plus" is that the howling winds will begin to lie down and make sight fishing and getting out a little further much easier.

Flamingo has seemed further than ever. I think the price of fuel these days are getting fishermen to really think through their day plan. Now, expect the same number of smaller skiffs out on the water with some regularity. These folks are serious. Many that I know are going to four stroke engines. We'll see more of that however; there won't be any shortage of fish. Expect consistent fishing through summer.

Good places to try at Flamingo are Snake Bight, just around the corner from the marina. The deeper grass flats are great early for rolling tarpon, trout, and snapper. Snook will be on the flats to the shorelines and coastal areas. Coastal rivermouths will still be worthwhile. There has been an abundance of goliath grouper. I like to link them to the term ubiquitous because I find them on flats edges, creeks, offshore, and in the backcountry. This will be a strong bite for catch and release.
Biscayne Bay area has will continue to produce a good run of bonefish and permit for those anglers that dislike the commute to Flamingo. The western shorelines have had large redfish appearances. Look closely. Get out and fish because the bite will be hot.

Fishing tip: keep your baits cool in the heat. Use an insulated cooler, oxygen for the live well, and/or ice to keep water temperatures comfortable. Change water frequently too and keep a lid on.
