Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

060409
I am fishing out of Haulover in N. Miami Beach this afternoon with Karen Frick and her father Earnhart which are visiting from Germany. The Mullet schools are pushing thru the inlet and it didn't take long and Karen had a 60 lb Tarpon hooked up for 1 jump. She had never sight casted to a fish before and was excited about it. We caught some Trout and Cuda's and ended the trip with a 31 inch Snook.

I am with Joe his wife Debbie and his kids Jacob and Joanna today at Flamingo. The most important thing today was to keep those rods bent and we did. They caught plenty of Trout up to 3 lbs., Jacks to 10 lbs. Ladyfish and Snappers. We also fished some Tripletails in the open water which Joe loved.
We ended the day with some Shark fishing.

I am at Flamingo today with Dr. Irwin Becker and his friend Matt from Wyoming who was a pretty good fly caster. I have been fishing with Irwin for a long time and I always try to show him some thing he hasn't seen, it is tough since he has been fishing Flamingo since the 60's. we started out close found some Tarpon but they move out before we got a shot at them. I kept my eye on a serious storm which was coming from the east and building around us. My choices were run back to the marina or run west, the direction the storm was moving. We started to run west when I noticed a really big push of water, I slowed and watched a giant school of big Redfish bust baits and move our way. They came within 30 feet of us. The wind was easily mid 30's and gusting as the storm was only a mile away, Irwin cast a top water plug but the school moved quickly still blowing mullet out of the water. It was nasty but I spotted another group and they made cast but it was tough with the wind. It was time to go, we out ran the storm which followed us all day. We got up the coast and fished Tarpon which were shut down for the most part. We ended up in Whitewater Bay on a Goliath Grouper spot, Matt was first. I pitch a small Jack into the spot to show him where I wanted it. The rod doubled over and Matt was in a tug of war, he loved it. The fish got him way back in the sticks and broke him off on a spinning rod,
that's when I asked do you really want to catch him. I opened my rod locker and pulled out the "Grouper rod" Matt smile and said that's more like it, he caught the next one although it wasn't as big as the first. Irwin was next he got slammed and put the heat to the giant Grouper, I am not kidding his fish almost pulled him in until I grabbed on to him. He battle for a while and finally broke off. Irwin picked up his bait caster and Caught a smaller one on a Gulp Shrimp. We ended the day with a flurry of good fish Trout, Snappers, Ladyfish and a bunch of Snook.
