Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report
Summer is advancing quickly which means excellent fishing in south Florida. Finally, winds lay down and give us some clearer water to sight fish, fly fish, and get out a little further. The air and water temperatures will be hot but advancing afternoon rainstorms will balance everything out. What I like about summer is that fish seem to cooperate consistently. And I get out more often because of that, so it pays to deal with the heat of summer.
Fishing Biscayne Bay has gotten difficult over the years however; there are still many days we leave the water smiling. Plenty of big permit will begin to scour the flats and channel edges on both east and west coasts. Always bring at least a few live crabs. There's always a chance that a nice mutton snapper takes the bait. Bonefish will be in similar areas. Lately, I like to chum the flats with pieces of cut shrimp for a change of strategy, especially in areas where it's difficult to see the sea bottom. This will also bring bonnethead sharks, boxfish, and maybe barracuda, among other species. Great opportunity for fly fisherman when chumming; even if you consider it unorthodox. Chumming works-even on the flats. Chumming is even better for those targeting snapper. There are some superb muttons just off Biscayne Bay near Miami.
Flamingo will find the flats alive with redfish, trout, snook. Early risers can spot tails and wakes. Thanks to the new poling zones the fish have really bounced back. These areas have kept mass boat traffic away and most serious sight casters and flats fishermen have enjoyed success on the shallow flats of Florida Bay.
The boating season in south Florida will be at its peak.
