"Tarpon Time"

Capt. Jim Hobales
April 18, 2010
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

041810

This winter has had some tough conditions to deal with but if your a hardcore angler you go anyway! This season we dealt with cold water until 3 weeks ago, now that's it finally warming up the fish are getting more comfortable and they are moving into their spring time locations. April is a good time for Tarpon on both east and west coast, they show up in the back country and are still chasing Shrimp in Government Cut. The shrimp runs this year have been fantastic, in turn the Tarpon bite is great. All you have to do is go!

This past week the wind blew pretty hard and had a day rained out, I keep thinking it has to get better. I fished with Doug and Dominic on Thursday in Whitewater Bay, it was a steady 25 -30 mph. I was still searching for my first Snook of the year at Flamingo. I hit all my spots and noticed very little activity so I continued north to look for Tarpon, We got into Jacks and Ladyfish for a while and moved on. I sat on a point waiting for Tarpon to show up and they started exploding on the surface, Dominic hooked a good fish on the point and a 24 inch Snook came up and jumped. I can't tell you how excited I got over that fish, this is only my 4th trip to Flamingo this year. I decided to stay away until water temp's came up above 70 degree's. We had a warmer day and water was 75 degree's. We worked a shoreline and caught a dozen Redfish but could not get a Tarpon bite. Dominic did manage two big Sharks as well. Doug had the hot hand on the Redfish catching 7 or 8. All Dominic need was a Trout for the Slam so I ran in and got his Trout. The Tarpon are in so when the wind comes down it's "Tarpon time in the Gulf".

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

As soon as this wind dies we will see allot of Tarpon rolling
