Tarpon or nothing!

Capt. Jim Hobales
February 21, 2011
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

021911

I am fishing with Adam and his wife Cecilia today in Whitewater Bay for Tarpon. We got out early and saw another boat hooked up, I thought that might be a good sign. We started casting and looking for rolling fish but it was slow. The water temps were right around 70 degrees but the full moon was still bright in the sky. Adam and Cecilia worked hard and caught allot of Ladyfish while hoping for a Tarpon
bite. I said lets go try something else then we can come back later. We fished a sand bar and had loads of big Trout up to 22 inches and a couple fish that we never saw but zipped off some line. Adam hooked a nice Redfish on a X-Rap while casting a point. We made a run to look for Tarpon in another area but no luck. We ended up back in the same place as we started and they were rolling but not eating. We stayed out as long they could but no Tarpon action today!

I am with Karl and his wife Susan today and they want Tarpon, I had something totally different in mind for them until they said Tarpon is the goal! We went back to Whitewater Bay and got on them early but again today the big full moon was shining. We worked all the area that Tarpon like to hold in and we caught allot of Trout, Jacks and Ladyfish. We took a break from the Tarpon and found a shore line loaded with Redfish, they were really spooky and we couldn't get them to eat. We went back and gave the Tarpon another try and they refused our lures. I said I have a spot where I might be able to get a small one hooked up, Karl said let try! It didn't take long and Susan had one come up behind her Twitch n Rap but turned off of it. It took about fifteen minutes but Karl finally got his small Tarpon, well almost! Everything but the picture for his Bucket list.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

This week the Tarpon bite should turn on down at Flamingo.

On the other hand the evening Tarpon bite locally off of south Beach has been good.
