Tarpon on the beach

Capt. Jim Hobales
December 19, 2008
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

The next stop we made was an area I found a couple years ago and its just a great spot, its deep with heavy grass and giant potholes that but up against a bunch of dead trees. This spot has not produced any monster fish but on this day it produced a very nice 23 3/4 inch Gag Grouper, some big Mangrove Snappers, 2 lost fish one was a Redfish. We finally made our way to Shark River and got into an assortment of fish Groupers, Snappers, Jacks, Goliath Groupers, Ladyfish, and there were plenty of missed fish that kept us guessing. The winds continued blowing 25 mph all day and we made the best of it by adapting to our conditions.

The Tarpon are here and the evening bite is already at the good level. They are on the beaches between Haulover Inlet and Government Cut, the common way to catch them is Shrimp drifted behind the boat with a 7/0 - 9/0 circle hook. I also like throwing a Glow Shrimp and a Catch 2000 a half hour before it gets dark, this has worked on more than one occasion. tonight we had 2 hits one on a plug and the other on a live mullet, which are still plentiful in the North Bay.

Flamingo Fishing Forecast:

Tarpon have shown up on Miami Beach and will be here until July.
