Tarpon are thick

Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

Windy days are back this week but i always try to make the best of it. This past weekend the calm winds and great conditions were all the Tarpon needed to bite. I was out of town fishing a tournament as usual. I heard the Tarpon bite in the Gulf of Mexico was outstanding.

Tonight I am with John Karay and his buddy Todd fishing N. Biscayne Bay. We got out early and netted some mullet. We spotted some big Tarpon ad 3 big Snook in the mullet schools but spooked them so we moved on. We started out casting the grass flats catching some Trout. The mullet schools started getting nervous so I rigged a live Mullet, it didn't take long for it to get hit. The rod doubled over and pulled plenty of drag but the fish never came up. after 10 minutes or so we got back our leader which was cut by a Lemon Shark. I re-rigged and did it again same results except we landed this Lemon Shark. The winds were blowing about 25 and it was making it difficult to stay up on the flats even with the power pole down. I ran over to the inlet and dragged a Yozuri 6 inch plug which was crushed by a big Snook. Todd fought the Snook which weighed 18 lbs. We got some photos of the great Snook and released it and called it a night.

This morning I am at Flamingo, I am fishing with Bernie,Marty and Bob. These guys are elderly and have been buddies along time. The morning conditions weren't to bad but by the end of the day it windy and it beat these guys up. We targeted Tarpon with live bait but they were not interetsed, we thru lures but only caught Jacks and Trout. By the end of the day they were worn out and decided the next day wouldn't be worth it, I had to agree.
