T.S Sandy will push mullet down!

Capt. Jim Hobales
October 24, 2012
Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have been chasing the mullet for the past 2 weeks, out on the coast when its not to windy but mostly in the bay. I have found an area in the inter coastal that's holding some fish and there are some big ones.

10-15-12

I fish with Paul and Mike in the morning out of Haulover Marina, I had netted some baits both pilchards and finger mullet. I saw some Pelicans diving around the inlet and threw out a handful of pilchards, instantly we had 10 -15 lb Jack Crevalles busting up. The mullet schools were pouring through and Tarpon were sky rocketing on them, this bite lasted for 45 minutes and then they were gone.

In the afternoon I fished with Greg May and his wife Christine and we were after Tarpon, we found some eating mullet and had 1 bite and watched as several others busted around us. I ran to the mouth of the inlet and watch Tarpon bust mullet schools as we approached the bridge. I rigged up a mullet and watched as they blew up all around us, it made great video for Christine. We drifted with the mullet schools and kept our baits in the school and all of a sudden Greg line was screaming off the reel, not sure what happened but he got cut off. The fish turned off and quit coming thru the inlet, we called it a night.

10-19-12

I am out with my brother Jeff and his sons Andrew (6) and Mark(10) and my son James, we are out to chase Mullet schools. I netted some baits and we were off, I wanted to start on the beaches. I made a long run north and never saw a mullet school so I turned around. I needed to get these guys on fish before they exploded . I ran to a action spot where I could get several species! It didn't take long and we had steady action with Bluefish, Jacks and Trout. They were warmed up so we went looking for Tarpon! I used my Minn Kota I pilot to anchor me on the edge of inter coastal (this is an awesome tool). I put out a couple live mullet as they cast at Jacks that were busting mullet schools. They caught allot of Jacks but the big screams came when a Tarpon crashed the party. This 150 lb. monster was chasing our mullet and eventually ate it. The Tarpon gave us 2 jumps letting us know how big it was and let go. The kids had never scene that before and wanted one badly! I rigged another mullet and a few minutes later we were hooked up again but the fish let go. Yes, I was using circle hook's with the rods in the rod holders, but some times they come off. I ran down to Government Cut and looked around for all the obvious signs of a mullet run. We got into a large school of big Tarpon down the beach but it was more sight seeing than anything else. We got forced off the water by a really nasty lightning storm and called it a day.

I'm out of Haulover marina today with Jerry Siud. We got out early and bait was hard to find, it was blowing steady 25mph. I decided instead of wasting time we'll just fish lures. I ran around a bit and eventually end up on the grass flats catching Trout, Ladyfish, Jacks and Cuda's. I ran down and looked for Tarpon and found a decent school. I rigged up a "Twitch n Rap" and Jerry caught a 40 inch Tarpon. The day was slow so we called it around noon.

The wind is blowing @ 25 as I'm writing this report and T.S. Sandy is coming up the coast. The mullet run will be in full force by this weekend and into next week. Once the wind comes down and it a little safer, its gonna get red hot! This will be the week of the 30 th , if your interested give me call at 305 333 8149.
