Capt. Jim Hobales

Flamingo - Saltwater Fishing Report

112913

This has been an interesting week I fished Flamingo with Bill Slomka and his friends Joe and Barry. It wasn't the easiest of days but we managed to catch a big Redfish, Trout, Jack, ladyfish, Snappers Sheepheads and a few others in a half day of fishing. The winds were blowing and it was cold.

I am with Pierre and his sons Luka and Niko and his father. the day started off slow with some small Trout, Jacks and Snappers. We were catching fish but I wanted some bigger fish for these kids. I went and fish a bulk head on the Rickenbacker bridge and got some big bites from decent sized Jacks, Snappers including a just short Mutton. We ended the day on the grass flats catching Trout on every cast for an hour until a squall chased us away. Luka had a 3.8 lb. Trout on a" twitch n rap". I ran in to their home and hid from the rain, we fished a fished a bridge by their house by chumming up big Jacks.

I woke up on Wed and saw the whales stranded off the west coast I wanted to go help out funny enough I got a call from NBC to hire my boat to run a reported out there. It ended up being with Ari Odser a guy I've been watching for ever. We ran 35 miles north to Highland Beach and the whales were floating on the surface as rescue boats tried to keep them from going back towards the shore line. While we were running back I spotted a whale on the beach and it had been hit by a giant Shark most likely a Tiger, the bite mark was about 36 inches across. We ran up at 1:30 and had to be back at dock for 5 PM news. We ran 70 miles round trip in 2 1/2 hours not your usual Flamingo trip. This info is for new Pathfinder owners with SHO 250's, I ran 52 mph for 1 hour up and 1 hour back and burned 27 gallons. It was flat and I never let off knowing time was critical.

Today was a little different as we were running up north boats were coming back and word from the other boats they whales were moving. We ran all the way to Plover key and saw some boats a few miles off shore but weren't sure if it was them so we headed back down to Highland to see how many were on the beach. We counted 6 dead and I know a few were attacked offshore by Tiger Sharks.

This was a totally different week but
