Tonya, Derey, Phillip and Brandon from Greensboro, North Carolina, chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The goal was to catch their first Sailfish, and this is what we set out to accomplish.

Sailfish have been coming along the reef in 130 ft. of water, so we decided to slow troll naked Ballyhoos down the reef. We trolled north of Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore, from 100 ft. of water out to 400 ft. and back in, looking for schools of live bait, birds and signs of Sailfish feeding. The spread was four naked Ballyhoos and two deep plainers with sea witches with Bonita strips.

After searching for an hour, we got a really nice bite on the sea witch. All of a sudden, a Sailfish came jumping out of the water showing its magnificent colors – Sailfish on! Both Derey and Brandon took turns fighting the Sailfish, and after a good battle, the angler brought the Sailfish to the side of the boat. Matt, our mate, took the hooks out, pictures were taken, and the Sailfish was put back into the water to fight another day.

Still looking to catch another Sailfish, we decided to put out two kites with two live Goggle Eye baits from each kite, continuing to travel north of Fort Lauderdale. We got a real nice bite on the left short - Brandon was the angler, as well as Derey. The anglers fought the Sailfish until he was along the side of the boat. We got the hooks out, pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released. Great job, Brandon and Derey, on catching two Sailfish – no easy feat!

It was now time to head back to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
