Cool Weather Sailfishing

Capt. Ryan McBride
December 10, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish remains our most consistent fishing here off Fort Lauderdale. Even the slow days are seeing at least 3 shots in a half day. The fish have been biting best when we have had a north current off the coast. Today the current was slow and the fishing slowed again but we still had shots at 4 sails in 4 hours. We have had a good mix of size of fish too, fish from ten to 80lbs have come off the kites and flatlines.
In between sailfish bites we have had dolpin and kingfish pretty consistently. Again the dolphin have been best when we have had north current. When the water is running north we have had best luck fishing the shallows for dolpin in 50-80ft of water as the fish have been chasing the ballyhoo on top of the reef. Also mixed with the dolphin on the sailfish are the smaller sails and we have seen them as shallow as 10ft of water chasing the ballyhoo off the Ft. Lauderdale coast.
Kingfish have been schoolie sized but fight well on our light tackle and have been keeping the action up when the sailfish are slow.
Snapper fishing is starting to slow, but that might just be due to the fact that we have had blue gulfstream water running to the north making the fish spooky in the clean water. Today the water turned green we just didn't put much effort into snapper fishing as I normally due. Groupers are on the usual wrecks off Fort Lauderdale, we have not had much luck though as the bull sharks have been taking too many fish during the fight. These fish are congregating to spawn and are not worth targeting just to become shark food.
Offshore some dolphin have been caught, but the seas have not allowed successful targeting of them. Also offshore we have seen a good amount of the baby blackfin tunas that are here pretty much year round off Fort Lauderdale.
Give me a call if you would like to go fishing.
