Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Andy and Michelle Edelbach and brother Ed from Minnesota chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea charter fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds today were out of the east at 12 mph and seas were running 4-5 ft.

As the Edelbach's boarded the Happy Day Today, we discussed what type of fish they were interested in catching, and Michelle said they were interested in catching an Atlantic Sailfish. We stopped in the inlet of Fort Lauderdale to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait. Fifteen minutes later we were at the sea buoy which sits in 120 ft. of water off of Fort Lauderdale FL. We started off trolling with two plainers down each with a double hook Bonito strip with a sea witch in front. For surface baits we went with two Ballyhoos and two Bonito strips.

There was little to no current today so in this situation I trolled the reefs heading from one artificial wreck to another; we caught a few Kingfish, Bonitos and Mahi Mahi's. The water color was changing, and it looked right to do live bait fishing, so I positioned myself over one of our artificial wrecks located in 180 ft. of water. We put two kites out with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one Goggle Eye from the rigger. The trap was set – all we needed was the right predator to come along. As time ran out, I stayed a little longer and it paid off. As we were bringing in the right kite, the Sailfish made his appearance on the right short – dorsal fin out of the water, 75 ft. from the boat, chasing the live Goggle Eye around – putting on a spectacular show for the Edelbach's. Hooked up and the fun began as Andy was our angler and did battle for 15 minutes, bringing the fish to the side of the boat while Mark, our mate, wired the fish. Pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

The anglers retired into the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. Mark filet the Mahi Mahi's which will be served for dinner tonight.
