Deep Sea Fishing/ Ft. Lauderdale

Capt. John Logan
November 25, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep sea fishing here in Ft Lauderdale continues to yield Sailfish and Mahi-Mahi. We are targeting these fish once again inside of 200 feet of water and we are seeing a few of both species way up inside the reef line in water less than 50 feet deep. These fish on the "inside" are basically feeding on Ballyhoo and working their way south. Other species are in there too on the Ballyhoo and can be mistaken for Sailfish if you see the commotion of scattering (showering) Ballyhoo but can't make out who is causing all the activity. Long drawn out chases with Ballyhoo frantically skipping across the surface with no visible predators or "takes" on the surface are often the work of at least a single Sail and probably more. They are very patient and will often run the bait schools for a considerable distance before showing themselves when they begin to pick off the now weary Ballyhoo. Sailfish are actually very polite to one another and very seldom fight over a bait. More than one may approach a baitfish, but only one will make an aggressive take of that bait whether it is a freebie or your offering complete with a hook. Never take your eyes off the action as you may miss a fish showing @ the school. Once they begin taking the baitfish off the surface they are easily seen. Mahi-Mahi on bait schools can also be patient, but more than likely not unless they have a fairly full stomach. They often get right down to the business of getting a meal for themselves before their school mates. Bonito and Tuna typically waste little time chasing and begin bombing away quickly. Barracudas and various types of Jacks and Macks get in on the action too.
So don't be content to sit in the deeper water and just wait for your chance. Although the majority of fish taken here are outside or on top of the reef line, and we will all do just fine out there, right now deep sea fishing in Ft Lauderdale for those Sailfish and Mahi-Mahi isn't always in the deep.
