Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
With the winds in Ft. Lauderdale this week out of the northeast 10-15 mph, putting the seas 3-4 ft. high made it sporty for deep sea fishing in Ft. Lauderdale. This was prime weather for Wahoo and Sailfish hook ups.
Wahoos are the fastest fish in the ocean – clocked at 64 mph. The initial hook up will peel off 100 yards of line in a few seconds. Their bodies are torpedoed shape with blue neon and silver vertical stripes making them a prize trophy fish for mounting and for eating. The meat is excellent, broiled, baked, or fried. They are dangerous predators - in my past 35 years of deep sea fishing I have seen the damage that they can do with their razor sharp teeth. One particular incident comes to mind where the mate wound up with 60 stitches in his calf.
The two most productive ways to catch Wahoos are trolling at 7-12 knots with surface baits, such as Lures or Ballyhoos, running the baits a little bit further back than normally trolled. The other way is using live bait – Goggle Eyes, Speedos, Bonitas, Mullets – either from the rigger or from flying kites.
The depth of water off of Ft. Lauderdale to target these fish are 120 ft. (which will put you off the third reef) out to 350 ft. Also Wahoos are found in any depth of water by any floating debris such as boards.
The Sailfish also this week in Ft. Lauderdale have been hooked up in the same depth of water, mixed in with Wahoos. The best result for hooking up Sailfish is live bait – either from the kite or pulling the bait from the riggers. Another method for catching Sailfish is using dredges with dead bait. The Sailfish have been ranging from 5-7 ½ ft in length. Sailfish grow at an accelerated rate – their lifespan is 5 years - and their average adult weight is 75 lbs, with the World Record for Atlantic Sailfish at 128 lbs.
