Deep Sea Fishing Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt.Zsak

Capt. David Zsak
December 24, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Merry Christmas from the Happy Day Today in sunny South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale!!

Sailfish still coming through in good numbers in deep sea fishing off of South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale. Dave Pincus and brother, Larry, from Rhode Island went out with us in the beginning of the week to do some deep sea fishing, telling some good fish stories about the Tuna and Strippers they were catching off of Rhode Island. They decided to target Sailfish so they purchased a dozen Goggle Eyes for live bait from Bud, the baitman, which we intended to use later on in our kite fishing.

We started off trolling with Ballyhoos and Bonita Strips for surface baits, pulling a Mullet dredge on one side and a Ballyhoo dredge on the other for teasers. My plan was to troll to the north and set up over one of 34 artificial reefs off of Ft. Lauderdale, South Florida. When there is little or no current, I like to set up on top of wrecks. The wrecks will hold the baitfish around them and in return the predators are there feeding - hopefully, one of them will be a Sailfish. Not too long after setting up two kites with four live Goggle Eyes as bait from the kites and one on our down rigger, Mahi Mahi's appeared. We hooked up 4 Mahi Mahi's, in the 5-7 lb. range, and one nice Smoker King Fish that weighed 22 lbs.

Then, our Sailfish made his appearance!! Dave was fortunate in the past to catch Sailfish while deep sea fishing in South Florida, Ft. Lauderdale so he wanted his brother, Larry, to catch his first Sailfish. After hooking up the Sailfish, the fish came out of the water showing us all his power, as he tail walked towards the boat. Mitch cleared the other lines to allow me to back down onto the Sailfish. The Sailfish ran off leaving ¼ of the line on the reel – "That is a lot of line out for one Sailfish" Mitch said, "it must be a big one". Twenty-five minutes later we had him to the boat, which was a good thing because Larry was starting to feel a little tired – he yelled – "How much longer." I yelled, "I can see the whites of his eyes." Mitch grabbed a hold of the bill and brought him into the boat to take pictures, afterwards, releasing the fish to watch him swim away. Dave said, "I'm glad that was my brother and not me."

We headed back from our 4 hour deep sea fishing charter trip to the dock at Bahia Mar, in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale. This ends another successful and adventurous fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
