Deep Sea fishing in Ft.Lauderdale on Happy Day Today/Capt. Zsak

Capt. David Zsak
February 8, 2011
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

As the northeast and central United States have been experiencing one of the five worst blizzard on record with people shuffling snow 24 hours in a day, here in sunny South Florida Ft. Lauderdale the temperatures this week have been in the mid 80's day time, mid 60's at night with beautiful blue skies.

Michael Gotts from Chicago came to sunny South Florida to do some deep sea salt water fishing with the charter boat Happy Day Today here in Ft. Lauderdale. We started off trolling off of the sea buoy in Ft. Lauderdale. Winds out of the east, southeast at 10-12 mph pushed the blue water into the first reef.

With two plainers out – one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drome spoon and the other with a red and white sea witch with a bonita strip behind, it was the best method to hook up King Fish and Black Fin Tunas this week. The King Fish have been hooked up in 110-190 ft. of water, mixed in with Bonitas. The majority of the King Fish have been in the 3-5 lb. class with some running from 10-15 lbs. The Black Fin Tunas have been running a little bit deeper, anywhere from 350-550 ft. of water off of Ft. Lauderdale. Our Amberjacks and King Fish have been congregating around our artificial wrecks, 36 of which we have in Ft. Lauderdale - the King Fish around the artificial wrecks in shallow waters and the Amberjacks in the deeper watered wrecks. After Mr. Gotts and his party hooked up various King Fish, Black Fin Tunas and Amberjacks, they decided to do some Shark fishing.

To the surprise of the charter boats in Ft. Lauderdale, the deep sea Shark season fishing is a month early. This week alone there were numerous Tiger Sharks, Bull Sharks, Hammerheads and Thresher Sharks hooked up in depth of 350 ft. of water off of Ft. Lauderdale. The technique used for Shark fishing is a surface bait, a mid range bait and a bottom bait, plus a kite with live baits. Tackle should be a minimum of 80 lb. test line and 19 wire with 11 and 12/O ring eye hooks. The safest method when you have a Shark close to the boat is to take your pictures and release the fish without harm. The acid in all salt water fish is extremely corrosive and will eat through a steal hook within one week. After Mr. Gotts had a 50 minute battle with a 250 lb. Hammerhead Shark, he released his catch.

We headed back from our 4 hour deep sea salt water fishing charter trip to the dock at Bahia Mar, in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale. This ends another successful and adventurous fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
