Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Amy Metrailer, with sons, William, age 15, and Spencer, age 13, from Woodstock, GA chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Winds were out of the east at 15 mph, overcast with bouts of rain, seas running 4-5 ft.

Amy, William and Spencer have fished with me before and previously caught a Shark in that trip. Today we were hoping to catch a Sailfish for the boys. We stopped and picked up a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait located in the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes later, we had two plainers in the water with four surface baits at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale in 120 ft. of water.

As I trolled the reef ranging from 80 ft. out to 180 ft., Amy and the two boys took turns rotating and bringing in the fish. A color change was forming south of Fort Lauderdale in 160 ft. of water, which looked like a good area to do some live bait kite fishing. I put out two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one Shark bait from the rigger. Luck was on our side – it did not take long for the black shadow to make an appearance. The Sailfish grabbed the live Goggle Eye from the kite and came out of the water exposing his size and brilliant neon colors, grey-hounding away from the boat. This was very large Sailfish – even in the distance he looked extremely large. William was our angler and placed himself into the fighting chair to do battle, and a battle it was!!! William is an excellent young angler and he knew all the tricks, but the Sailfish was a rough one. After a long 45 minute battle, Eric, our mate, put the XL Sailfish in the boat for picture taking. His length was 93 inches with an estimated weight of 60 lbs.

With a smile on William's face and a soar arm, it was time to retire into the a/c salon for the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. We ended up with a total of 1 Sailfish, 7 Tunas, 1 Barracuda, 1 Mahi Mahi, 1 Kingfish and 6 Bonitos for an excellent day of fishing.
