Dirk Schonenberg from Holland, a good customer who has fished with us every year for the past five years, chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing. Dirk is the owner of DS Quality Yachts, builders of luxurious custom yachts ranging from 200 ft. to 450 ft. in length, and was in town for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. Along for the charter was Dirk's guest and friend, Ivan Bitanga from Croatia. We had winds out of the east 7-12 mph with seas running 2-4 ft., temperatures in the mid 80's – a typical gorgeous Fort Lauderdale day.

In his past charters with us, Dirk has caught numerous Sailfish – today's objective was for Ivan to catch his first Sailfish. On the way out we stopped to pick up a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait. Twenty minutes after leaving the dock, we were in 140 ft. of water, located close to the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale. We went directly into kite fishing, and put two kites out each with two live Goggle Eyes, along with one Shark bait on the bottom. Counter balances on each opposite corner of the kites will allow the kites to fly in opposite directions.

Our first predator was a Shark that appeared on the right short kite bait; Dorsal out of the water, frantically chasing the Goggle Eye. Unfortunately, he pulled the bait off the hook. Our next two bites were Kingfish that skyrocketed on the long kit baits, chopping the live Goggles Eyes in half and missing the hook.

We reset the kites again. While Dirk was telling us about his last fishing expedition in Costa Rica where he captured a 600 lb. Black Marlin, a black shadow appeared on the left long kite bait. With dorsal fin out of the water, the Sailfish attacked the bait aggressively and immediately came out of the water to show his spectacular neon colors as the sun reflected off his body. Ivan was our angler and jumped into the fighting chair to do battle. Twenty-five minutes later, Ivan retrieved the line on the Shimano TLD 25 reel and brought in the Sailfish. Pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

With a smile on Ivan's face and Dirk giving me the thumbs up sign, it was time to return to the dock. The anglers retired into the a/c salon to relax on the ride back to the dock at Bahia Mar, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
