Fort Lauderdale Charter Fishing Report

Capt. John Logan

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale fishing report
January, 2010

Fort Lauderdale, cold fronts, snow… What's next, ice fishing? Hardly… While we are experiencing our deepest cold front in recent years, it will be like this only a short time before our weather returns to normal. With a few days not reaching 60 degrees, we are now poised to hopefully see the Sailfish run we've expected.
With a few of these fronts having passed with very limited results, this latest front has produced near record temperatures. Within the first few days of this, Sailfish have been seen tailing down sea. Multiple catches of Sails should become the norm very soon, one of our favorite types of fish to catch.
Along with this push of fish, another winter visitor, the shark, will be coming around more often. They will become thick in the next few months and fishing for them becomes more of a possibility as we move further into the season.
Kingfish on the reef will slow some, as will the presence of Mahi-mahi. A few will still be caught but it will become the exception rather than the rule. Cobia will be coming shortly and Amberjack will be taking residence on the deep wrecks and reefs. A moratorium on Grouper as of the 19th of January will mean all grouper will have to be released until further notice.
All in all, January can be a very exciting time here in Fort Lauderdale. Personally, I can't wait to get back into shorts.
See you on the rip.
