Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fort Lauderdale deep sea fishing trends are reports that tell what is happening locally, not necessarily what we've caught on our specific boat. We give these reports every few weeks or so to give you an idea of what's being caught here. Many of our guests have specific needs in mind with their fishing trip and we are sometimes restricted to what we fish for. They may want edible fish while the Sailfish are biting or maybe they want a Sail while the Sharks are snapping. We still post our regular fishing reports that are about specific trips and people so that information is available too.
The trend for right now in early December has been some good fishing! And our boat has been producing good catches of Mahi-mahi (Dolphin) and Sailfish. A cold front that came through a few days ago has the fish on the move. Good sized schoolie Mahi's are being caught with some really nice ones mixed in like the one in this picture that Dave Jackson is holding. That one tipped the scale at 38 lbs.
Most of our bites right now are coming from live bait fishing with the kites. The great part of fishing this way is you usually get to see the bite as it happens and many times can identify what kind of fish is eating. Smaller mahi-mahi can be tough to see but Sailfish stand out like sore thumbs in the blue water. Multiple Sail bites all at the same time have been frequent.
When conditions allow we have been having good success with bottom fishing for Snapper and Grouper. This is sometimes done while we're flying the kites waiting for a bite. Good sized mutton and Yellowtail Snappers are being caught as well as the occasional Red or Gag Grouper.
While these species have been doing well, a few others aren't doing so well. Kingfish have been scarce as have Bonitos. Far more rare than usual, they just aren't here in any numbers right now. Shark fishing has also been hit and miss though we expect this to improve soon. It's their time of year for the first run this winter season.
