Amie and Steve Kuhlman from Fort Lauderdale, along with Amie's father, John Piel, from Maryland chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team to do some deep sea charter boat sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. As the family boarded the boat, they were greeted by the Top Shot Sportfishing team. I introduced myself and asked them what they were interested in catching. Their response was "action" and something to take home and eat.

Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. If you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you will find yourself in 500 ft. of water due to our extreme drop off. We have a unique drop off in Fort Lauderdale very close to shore – no other area in the eastern coast has this advantage. For example, if you were going fishing off of New Jersey, you would have to travel 60-65 miles to get to the same drop off we have here.

We started out trolling with two #8 plainers down – one with a 3 ½ blue reflector drone spoon and the other with a blue and white sea witch in front of a double hooked Bonito strip. For surface baits we went with two Bonito strips and two Ballyhoos.

As Mark, our mate, was putting out the 2nd plainer rod explaining to our anglers how they work, the first plainer rod was hooked up. Amie was our first angler and reeled in an 11 lb. Kingfish. From there, it was none stop – the anglers took turns while Mark was in high gear to keep up with the action. I saw a couple of man-of-war birds diving into the water south of the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, and headed towards the birds. Mahi Mahi right long! Another Mahi Mahi left long! Steve and Amie were our anglers with their his and her fish. Amie reeled in the Bull and Steve reeled in the Cow Mahi Mahi.

With solid action for the entire charter, with a handful of swing and misses, we ended up with 19 Kingfish, (6 were shorts) and two Mahi Mahi's. As we headed back to the dock, the anglers retired into the a/c salon and enjoyed the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316. Mark filet out the Mahi Mahi's and a couple of Kingfish for the family to enjoy for tonight's dinner.
