Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charters This Week

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

I'll start off by saying the fishing in Fort Lauderdale is pretty good this week. Lots of snappers and kingfish are biting on our drift boat fishing trips. We're catching a lot of yellowtail snappers on the day and the night trips. Yellowtails have made up the majority of our action this week. Most of the yellowtails we're catching at night are keeper size ones. The tails we're catching during the day are about 50% keeper size and 50% just undersized. About 80% of the mutton snappers we're catching are just under keeper size. These numbers are about normal for this time of year. There are usually more keeper muttons around but they just increased the size limit this year, making a lot of them that would be keepers, just undersized. This should actually improve the numbers of them for years to come. A few nice kingfish are also being caught regularly on the drift fishing trips. Kings are the larger fish that we get aboard the drift boat and this year has actually been pretty good for them. We're averaging catching 50-100 fish per trip if you count the keeper fish and the throwbacks. Good action for everyone.

On our sportfishing charters, dolphin fishing continues to be the hot bite off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. November is a hot month for these popular fish. We're catching them in 100-300ft of water most days. They aren't schooled up into a big pile of fish, which is odd for dolphin. We're catching them one here, one there, sporadically throughout the day. Normally with dolphin fish, when you hook into one, there will be a bunch more dolphin that follow the one in as he gets caught. The trick when that happens is to leave one in the water at all times. The remaining dolphin will stay next to the boat as long as at least 1 is kept in the water. But lately, the dolphin we're catching have been mostly solo fish. It's easy to tell if there are more dolphin than the one you are catching. They swim right up the boat and they are brightly colored so they are easy to see. They are usually electric blue colored or bright yellow, depending on their mood. Dolphin change colors depending on if they are feeding or being chased. I always keep a pitch bait ready for dolphin when I am trolling in case a few followers swim up. They aren't picky eaters so you can cast out just about anything and they will eat it.

All in all, we're having a great winter fishing season here in Fort Lauderdale. Plenty to catch and some of them really nice size fish. A lot of good eating fish are being caught on both the drift fishing trips and the sportfishing charters. This is a great time of year to plan an end of the year company party fishing trip. We get a lot of them in December and it's a good time of year to do it with the good fishing and all. Good luck to everyone fishing this week. I will sea you on the water.
