Fort Lauderdale Fishing Deep Sea

Capt. John Logan
October 28, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Deep sea fishing here in Fort Lauderdale doesn't require a long boat ride. Less than 3 miles from shore, water depths can reach 500' and virtually anything that can be caught in the Atlantic Ocean can be had right here just a few miles from shore.
Our group today was from Texas, all involved in Medic Helicopter rescue in one form or another. No specific fish was wanted, just some fishing fun. The deep sea fishing provided well for us.
Edges, weed lines and tide rips are all caused by two different kinds of water coming together. In the case of a tide rip, tidal water exiting the inlet forms a line or "edge" of two different colors and temperatures of water trying to become one. Eventually they will mix but when this first happens, it is almost like water and oil, they do not mix easily. Currents also cause this, one fast, one slow. These edges and rips are great places to find fish and we found one of these rips in 400', only about 2 miles from shore today. We were one of the first boats on it and it played well for us. Weed and floating debris was caught in this edge and the Dolphin were in!
Most were undersized, we let 8 or 10 go because they were small. But we did manage a few "keepers" for the table. Catching these Mahi-mahi is a blast and we've mentioned that the last few years, the fall has been better for them than their traditional summer time. It appears that will happen again this year.
We also managed a few Spanish Mackerel, a Kingfish and a Barracuda this trip. I am still amazed that no Sailfish were taken from this line, it was text book perfect.
Our group took their table fare next door to the restaurant and had a great meal. It just doesn't get any fresher than that, here in Fort Lauderdale, fresh from the Deep Sea.
