Fort Lauderdale Fishing/ Deep Sea

Capt. John Logan
November 24, 2010
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale fishing offered some exciting deep sea action recently to Jay and Scott aboard the Marlin My Darlin. The 4 hour trip in the afternoon showed Andrew's ability to rig a perfect swimming Ballyhoo. Mahi mahi were found and a few boated for dinner which our guests ate next door at the restaurant. One Sailfish was raised but never committed; we get to try again in the morning for more on the 6 hour trip the next day.
With light winds and the trend having been what it was lately, we took the time to catch live Ballyhoo. They came quickly and within 40 minutes or so we were on our way to deploy our baits for Sailfish. A few Mahi were caught while we waited for our prized guest(s).
Patience is sometimes needed and doesn't always pay off. Today was Jay and Scott's lucky day however. A couple of Sails were in the pattern looking for food. Only one was hooked at first and the game was on.
But another fish had been around and Andrew found him a short time later as we fought the first fish. Another Sail hooked. Sorry boys, no time for pictures.
Catching Sailfish is always a blast. Doing it on 20lb spinner tackle? This will test your angling abilities. Finally getting the release on the first fish and I honestly cannot say if it was the first or second fish hooked, we were off to chase down the second. Another 10 minutes or so with the camera trying to catch the fish in the air and we had our second release.
A quick move with the boat put us back in front of the fish passing through but no hit came. As we waited another Sail appeared and we began again. This was a larger Sail and trying for another hook up just wasn't possible. We had our hands full just trying to back up to this one. Not an easy task on the light tackle either but soon enough we had the fish beside the boat for pictures and his safe release.
This time of year, fishing off Fort Lauderdale in the deep sea just couldn't be any nicer.
