Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
With the full moon just setting in the horizon, leaving an orange, yellow and purple tint in the sky with variable winds at 5 mph – little to no current and coming off of a full moon, I knew it would be difficult catching fish today in Fort Lauderdale. Brian Sutton with wife April and the main angler, 7 year old son Amo, chartered the Happy Day Today to do some deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
We started off catching live baits at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, FL that sits in 120 ft. of water. With chum bag over the side, the blue runners mixed in with Speedos came up to the chum bag to feed. With our 8 lb test line and #10 gold hooks and Bonita pieces for bait, Mitch, our mate, handed the rod off to Amo. He proceeded to catch the bait fish and remarked that this was just like catching Perch in his lake back home in Maryland. Amo was as happy as can be catching his bait fish with his mother on one side of him and his father on the other. I knew it would be slow fishing today so I planned to use the live bait over one of the wrecks later in our charter.
We started off trolling with the reliable blue 3 ½ blue reflector drome spoon on one plainer and a Bonita strip with a blue sea witch on the other plainer and 4 surface baits consisting of Ballyhoos, Bonita strips and fishing feathers. I headed towards one of our 34 artificial wrecks in Fort Lauderdale, FL, a 150 ft. freighter that rests at the bottom of 97 feet of water. Once we got to the wreck, we changed to do our live baiting. Mitch, our mate, put out four 20 lb test spinning rods with stinger rigs hook sets for our live bait - three on the surface and one down deep. I circled the wreck very slowly; one surface bait came out of the outrigger clip. Amo's scream of delight was as loud as the screaming line of the rod. I could see the flashing of our fish – a 25 lb Barracuda. We kept circling the wreck with a couple more hook ups. Finally, our King Fish appeared, was hooked and brought into the boat by April.
It was time to start heading back from our deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL to the dock at Bahia Mar. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing charter on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
