Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
With a sporty wind out of the north, northeast, 15-20 mph, seas 3-5 ft., Sailfish are pouring through our waters off of Fort Lauderdale. A group from AT&T, employees from all over the country, chartered the Happy Day Today with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea fishing off of Fort Lauderdale.
Our objective target fish was Sailfish – we stopped to purchase a dozen Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait that sits in Port Everglades, Fort Lauderdale. A fifteen minute ride out to the sea buoy put us in 120 ft. of water, on the edge of the drop off. We put out two kites, two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one Goggle Eye from the rigger. Five minutes into fishing, a Sailfish pops up on the left short kite, dorsal fin out of the water, swam around the bait but was not feeding. Still a beautiful sight to see - a Sailfish predator free swimming. Right long Sailfish!!! This Sailfish swam once around the live Goggle Eye and decided to feed. Line screaming off the reel, Sailfish out of the water, putting on an awesome show for all to see, as he did his 360 turn in the air. Then, the line went slack. We retrieved the line to determine the problem - his abrasive bill went thru the 80 lb. monofilament leader. We reset again on top of one of Fort Lauderdale's 34 artificial wrecks. Right short, dorsal out of the water, swimming around the bait!!! Before the Sailfish could eat the bait, left short Sailfish appeared – a double header!!! Both fish hooked up – one Sailfish decided to swim towards the west, the other Sailfish decided to go north – putting us in an awkward position – two Sailfish going in different directions. This led to a Chinese fire drill, until the other kites and other lines were brought in. Now the fun began. With everything under control, both anglers doing a fantastic job – 25 minutes later, our first Sailfish was brought to the side of the bought by Mike Williams from Montana. Quick pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released. Now it was Greg Cockerham's turn from North Carolina to conquer his Sailfish. Fifteen minutes later, with a cramped left hand, Greg still won the battle – Sailfish was brought to the boat and pictures were taken.
