Fort Lauderdale Fishing Trips January

Capt. Mike Johnson
January 27, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale Fishing Charters overall have been great this month. We've seen great action with sailfish, some nice mahi mahi and a more wahoos than ive seen in a long time. We had some slow days too though. We just arent getting the cold fronts we need to really get these fish moving our way. The good news is, its going to happen, cold fronts or not they have to come by us to get to their spawning grounds. They are just running a little late. Daytime swordfishing has been great weve caught three swords this month out of four trips. The one trip we didnt catch one we caught our limit of wahoo and some nice dolphin so it was still a great day. Most of our wahoos are caught in and around the reef and while weve been catching some trolling dead baits, the real ticket has been slow trolling live baby (bullet) bonitas, with at least one on the down rigger. Wahoos dont eat little bonitas cause they want to they eat em cause they HAVE to, theyre irrestiable and they cant say no! We also catch mahi mahi, big smoker kings and sailfish on the little bonitas as well. Hammerhead sharks have been milling around a little bit this month and their numbers will grow in February.
