Fort Lauderdale Mahi Fishing in May

Capt. Mike Johnson
May 13, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fort Lauderdale Charter Fishing in May has been nothing short of spectacular. Starting off with one of the best runs of Mahi Mahi I've seen in a long time. Plenty of "gaffers" in the 8-12 lb range and more than our share of "slammers" fish over 20 lb!! Both eat great and both are eager biters with lots of hard runs and big jumps and probably one of the prettiest fish in the ocean. While mahi fishing in Fort Lauderdale has been great, lets not forget about the wahoos, blackfin tunas and big smoker kings! We've been catching alot of these fish on the troll but the big kings and the wahoos have been falling victem to small live bonitas or goggle eyes. We normally run three of these frisky live baits up top and at least one deep on the down rigger. Now the majority of these big king and wahoo bites come on the down rigger but we get plenty of shots up top out of the rigger as well and when we do they are awesome. The bait starts freaking, full knowing its doom, trying its futile escape due to its leash (your fishing line) and then it comes a full air born assault we call "skyrocketing". You watch in amazement as a 30 pound king or wahoo flies into the air 12-15 feet whith your bait in its mouth!! That never gets old. Hammerheads have also been out in force and also in numbers greater than the last two years. These great beasts we release unharmed to fight another day. Swordfishing has been incredible for the boats doing i, we havent had a sword trip this month, so lets go people!!!! Your missing it!! They are big and they are biting!!
