Ft Lauderdale Deep Sea Fishing Sharks

Capt. John Logan
October 8, 2012
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We get requests for something "big" deep sea fishing in Ft. Lauderdale often and sharks many times are used to fill this bill. A test of strength and endurance for something large on the end of the line was wanted today by Dave and his local friend Todd. We would put in our time trying for something large but first; a few fish just to get the skunk out of the box. 
We began trolling trying for some fresh fish to entice a sea creature to bite and this proved to be tough. Usually Kingfish and Bonito are plentiful but today was a struggle and our time was to be spent trying for big fish. We landed a few very small Bonitos and a Blackfin Tuna. It was time to rig baits and Chris began the task. As it always is, a fish struck as he was done rigging and this nice 15 lbs. King was caught seen here being held by Dave.

We had a few baits from a day or so before that were now rigged and used the Tuna as well. This pained me as they are excellent eating but our task was set. We set our baits out and waited as Dave and Todd tipped a bottle of Champagne, not the usual beverage for a morning trip.
The current was running slow and it took a while. A Mahi-mahi slid into our pattern and ate a small live bait we had out just for this purpose. Lunch would be served despite using the Tuna for bait.
And then, the bottom rod bent over and the drag began to run. We had our bite and it was taking line like the reel was in free spool.
Dave was on the reel as we instructed him how to gain line on this fish. It happened quickly and became fouled in another line we had out. This is never good.
The fight lasted about 30 minutes and the shark ended up being a 7' Hammerhead. Not huge but certainly big. I remember hearing Dave mention something about his arm being numb afterwards. 
We still had a little time left and reset our baits but that was our big bite of the day. We did manage to boat the fish to remove the hooks and it took both Chris and I to do this, so no picture was taken. They are supposed to be on the way.
Big is a relative word… what's big to you? Deep sea fishing off Ft. Lauderdale for sharks could just fill the bill.
