Ft. Lauderdale Fishing/ Sailfish

Capt. John Logan
January 5, 2011
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Our weather and fishing has changed a bit in Ft. Lauderdale since a passing cold front has got the Sailfish moving and we are seeing good numbers of these fish free jumping and also tailing in small groups to the south. The majority of these fish are fully grown. A lot of the action has been taking place in 100 to 120 feet of water. We found these fish tailing in clean green water (as opposed to blue) yesterday and caught three on dead trolled baits on a half day charter. We were strictly trolling dead baits and worked three or four other tailing fish into our spread of baits and teasers that refused to bite and two others that got the best of us and jumped off after hookup. This is fun fishing as it often slow developing once the traveling fish are spotted and eventually visible to almost all aboard when we point them out as they "tail" into our bait spread. One of our guests Bill out of Alaska had (has) caught thousands of pounds of Halibut and Salmon in 18 years of commercial fishing there and he loved every minute of this style of Florida fishing and was on full point the whole charter. Good stuff. This morning we switched to live baiting aboard Marlin My Darlin and had immediate Sailfish activity. There are still good numbers of Sails up the line and this should mean continued good fishing for us as they move thru our area and make their way south. Mahi-Mahi and Kingfish are biting as well as we had ten of the Mahi on a half day charter.
Ft. Lauderdale and fishing for Sailfish right now just doesn't get much better.
Capt. Rick Brady
