Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
We're catching a lot of good fish aboard the Catch My Drift this week. First off, snappers are king in the summer months. Yellowtails, mangroves and mutton snappers are biting excellent on our morning and afternoon deep sea fishing trips. Night fishing isn't as good for mutton snappers but it is really good for yellowtails and mangroves and some groupers too. Good action and lots of variety and color in the box has been the main catches on our drift fishing trips. June through August almost always has exceptional snapper fishing.
On some days, when the current isn't too strong and the wind is low, we can go really deep and do some deep dropping for vermillion snappers. They are biting really good lately too, and nice size ones at that. The average vermillion snapper is generally 1 pound, but lately the average has increased to 2-3 pounds on average. It's nice to see these big vermillion snappers. And when we are vermillion snapper fishing out in 200-300ft of water, we get some snowy groupers too. Snowys are a great eating grouper and they like really deep water. When we catch them, they often blow up like a balloon with their eyes and stomach filling with air and extending out of their orifices. This is because as the pressure decreases (the fish rises to surface from the bottom while being caught), the oxygen and gases in the fish expand and blow up. This causes certain organs to blow up such as the stomach and eye balls.
Good action will likely continue on our drift fishing trips as we get into late July and August. The summer months are when our drift fishing trips really shine. Good luck to everyone fishing over the next few months. I'll sea ya on the water.
