Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
Hello everyone Capt. Vinnie here, first id like to wish everyone a happy holidays and a happy new year! As I start this report out I know its been a little while since my previous report the boat was hauled out of the water for yearly maintenance. Back to the report now, we have been fishing the past few days so my report is very accurate... For the most part fishing this week has been somewhat ok some days better then others but hey a bad day of fishing is better then a good day at work right? At least thats what I hear, anyways starting offshore mahi mahi have been quite hard to come by there have been a few in depths of 500 plus feet but not something that you could go out and target with much success more of a lucky thing. Staying offshore there has been a few blackfin tuna and skipjack tuna but on the smaller side and fishing smaller baits like small feathers and small spoons have been the most productive for them. Moving on the edge the best bet has been sailfish, the sailfish bite has been very consistent on days where there is an ocean breeze, enough wind to be able to go kite fishing which is the act of using a fishing kite in order to keep live baits on the surface, a very very productive technique for predator fish that feed on other fish. The best depth on the sailfish has been 120 feet to 200 feet which off the coast of Fort Lauderdale is less than 2 miles from the beach. Another hot type of fishing this week has been bottom fishing, lots of vermillion snapper as well as amberjacks have been biting on sunken ship wrecks and deeper reefs, Live bait is key for targeting larger gamefish on these shipwrecks such as amberjack and big grouper. Also while fishing smaller pieces of cut baits we have been catching nice sized vermillion snappers as well as a few yellow eye snapper mixed in both great eating and lots of fun to catch. Moving towards the beach there has been a fair amount of Spanish mackeal in depths from 10 feet to 30 feet of water trolling the beach is a great way to get lines in early and possibly catch a few fish too, fishing light tackle a light as 15lb test line and small squid skirts and mylar flash type lures have been best and some of the mackeral have been on the larger size like 6 to 7 lbs alot of fun and great eating as well. Over the next few weeks we should see the sailfish bite off Fort Lauderdale improve as well as some larger game sharks arriving, defiantly very exciting if your looking to catch something large.
