Hooked Up fishing Ft Lauderdale Mid June

Capt. Taco Perez

Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

June 21
Today we had Ankur, Morissa, Tyler, Mindy, Manuel and Sivlian all from parts unknown.
We started out trolling the reef catching some big bonitos and one nice 7 to 8 pound dolphin fish.
Once we worked our way to the south off the coast of Hallandale we set out one of these big bonitos with 3 big trouble hooks in him. Well this only took a couple of seconds till a big barracuda sunk his big teeth into him and started to eat what he thought was going to be a free lunch.
15 min later this big barracuda was next to the boat wishing he had left this big bonito along.
J.J. got all the hooks out of him and we all watched him swim away in good shape.
Thanks again guys for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Ok today's fishing story started about 20 years ago when the guy named Thomas from Norway used to come down to Fort Lauderdale when I was a mate aboard one of the boats on A dock at Bahia-Mar. Thomas had a 12 or 13 year old son Mats that he used to leave with me at the dock to ether go fishing ob to help me around the boat.
As years started going by Thomas's son Mats continued to come to A dock and was now chartering what ever boat I was working on at the time.
Needless to say over the years we have become close friends and as luck would have it Mats and his wife had me over for a barbeque last night and Mats asked me to keep an eye on his son who was fishing off the sea wall while he ran upstairs to get something. I could not help but to thing how ironic as this crazy world in going threw some many changes today some things never seem to change.

Today happens to be Mats' B Day and we went out for a few hours of deep-sea fishing with Mats, his son Sander and Mats good friend Matt to celebrate his B Day.
Mats said his son had a dream last night about catching a shark so that was what he wanted to try to catch.
However with Sander being only 4 years old and this being Matt's first deep sea fishing trip I thought it would be best to start out trolling the reef trying to catch some kingfish and bonitos.
As we trolled the reef with 2 planner board running about 45 feet down and 3 baits skipping across the surface we ended up catching a half a dozen bonitos.
Ok time for the big one so in came the trolling gear and out went the kites with 3 live baits suspended from them along with one big shark bait also suspended from the kites. We also send a shark bait 350 feet down to the bottom and one last shark bait about half way down.
Ok the trap was set and within 25 min our bottom rod bent over and just like that we were Hooked Up.
We started out with Mats in the chair and his son on his lap.

But after about 10 min Mats had given us the word that he was having some neck pains due to an injury he had a couple of days ago.
Matt jumped at the chance to fight a big shark and wasted no time jumping in the chair. (Matt watch out what you wish for!!) At first Matt was having a tough time trying to reel in the biggest fish he had ever encountered but after listening to J.J. he started to get the hang of pull up and reel down and now he had a good rhythm going and before we knew it up popped this nice 7 foot hammerhead shark.
Nice going guys!!

We got a few photos and J.J. got 2 out of 3 hooks out of him and we watched him swim away in great shape.

Now things were looking good and we still had another 2 hours left to fish.
We ran off and started a little high speed trolling and ended up with 4 dolphin fish and one micro WeeHoo.

Mats Matt and little Sander thanks again and we'll see you guys again in a couple of months.

As we got back to the dock we had Armand from Jersey Shore eager to get out on the open sea and give his luck a shot aboard the Hooked Up.
Thius time we went right to big game fishing! So out went the kites and down went the shark baits.
Once again the wait was not long till once again the deep rod bent over and BAM just like that we were Hooked Up again. 15 min later Armand had his 7 foot hammerhead shark next to the boat. After a few pictures we watched him swim away in great shape.
Ok the skunk was now out of the box and the preasure was off so off shore trolling we went and landed a couple more dolphin fish.
Armand, Mats, Sanders and Matt thanks again for spending some time fishing with us today aboard the Hooked Up.

Today we had Richard and his son Richard his dad Richard and his son in law Gottii.
We started out trolling the reef catching more than enough bonitos but eating fish was really what we were looking for.
We tried some deep drops for snappers but due to the current holding the bottom was imposable. However we did manage to catch a couple snappers.
We headed off shore to troll our way back looking for some dolphin fish.
I like nothing more than writing fishing reports about lots of fish and great catches but there is a reason why they call it fishing and not catching.

Fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up does give you a big advantage because it is our back yard and we do fish these waters everyday so we do know where to go and what to do BUT not every fishing trip ins going to be a home run.
I hear it from the other fisherman all the time asking why do I post fishing reports about trips that were on the slow side. I tell them because that is fishing!
Richard thanks again and remember next time we will be staying longer and I will fish my heart out to catch you guys some good eating fish.

More Fishing Reports:

Hi my name is Taco and I run one of the best charter fishing boats down here in South Florida. WHY? Because I’ve been fishing the waters down here since 1969 and I started at the bottom and worked my way up the ladder. I know what it is like to read a web site and than once you get to boat things are not as you thought they would be. Not here I say it like it is. No surprises. I’ve got a 45 foot Hatteras with a big cock pit. Fully aircondishened and refrigerated. Big comfortable platform.
