Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
The Sailfish have shown up, the swordfish are biting deep, wahoos are in the bahamas, grouper are starting to congregate on the wrecks, mackeral are on the beaches, and it is getting cold.
We have experienced some great fishing over the past couple of weeks. If you can find the right conditions the sailfishing has been phenominal with a lot of double digit release days. Along with the sails are a lot of dolphin from 2-40lbs, and kingfish of all sizes. Best bet has been fishing north of Hillsboro Inlet for sailfish and look for blue water, north tide and bait. When they all come together the bite has been wide open. Best bet has been herring and goggle eyes off the kites.
Jigging on the wrecks is starting to produce some keeper groupers, as well as a few snappers, jacks, cudas, and kings. The deeper wrecks seem to be producing more than the shallow wrecks as the kingfish and cudas are more of a pain on the shallower wrecks.
Offshore dolphin can be found as well as small blackfins and skipjacks. At night the swordfish bite has turned on with multiple fish being caught everynight. Fish are ranging from undersized fish up to mid-hundred lbers. During the day fish are still being caught but a lot more effort is required to winch them up from the bottome than targeting them from the top.
On the beach the spanish mackeral have showed up which means that a few bigger kings have been caught. It should still be another month before it really gets hot.
Couple weeks ago now we fished the bahamas, while the weather didn't allow for much wahoo fishing the conditions look right and the tournament the following weekend proved that they were there. On the bottom small groupers and snappers (yellowtail) were biting along with the ever present triggers. Freediving the lobsters were thick and ever ledge seemed to hold a nice bunch of them.
We are going to Biloxi for a week and the SKA National Championship and then back to sailfishing for a little Thanksgiving action.
