Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing with the guys from Alabama aboard Hooked Up
June 15th, 2012
Today we had 5 guys from Alabama and 1 from Jasonville Florida that were ether best friends and or related but ether way you could say these guys were all family.
Once a year they all get together for what they call the boys weekend out and a nicer bunch of guys you would be hard pressed to find.
We had Keith, Jeff, Nelson, Toney, Michael and Bryant.
Now some of the guys wanted to catch some good eating fish while others wanted to try for that sea monster of a lifetime.
So we started out trolling the reef with 2 planner boards running about 45 feet down and 3 baits skipping across the surface. We started out with Keith landing a nice 10 to 12 pound kingfish and we figured trolling was going to be red hot. But as it turned out we only landed one other small king and trolling the reef turned out to be just plain old slow.
Ok lets see big fish and good eating fish? So I came up with a plan.
We brought in all the trolling gear and went out to about 400 feet of water and set out a couple of big shark baits and I figured while we were waiting for the big bite we all set down a chicken rig (5 hooks in a row with a lead at the bottom)
At first no bites at all so we picked up and moved and we must have moved to the right spot because once the shark baits were set and the chicken rig hit the bottom BAM the chicken rig rod started getting bites.
We started catching tilefish and let me tell you they are one of my favorite fish to eat. While they may not be a big fish (avg 3 to 4 pounds) Jeff managed to land a big 7 to 8 pounder.javascript:insert_image('

')

We ended up with more than enough fish for dinner and while we never did get that big monster bite we wanted everyone had a blast and I'm sure we get another shot at the big one with these guys next year.

Thanks again guys and looking forward to fishing with you again next year.

Big Hammerhead Shark caught aboard Hooked Up
June 14th, 2012
Today we had Larry and his son Jack along with Ron out for some deep-sea fishing aboard the Hooked Up.
We started out trolling and landing a couple black fin tunas.
Than we brought in the trolling gear and started doing some deep drops with a chicken rig (5 hooks in a line with a lead at the bottom) once the bait hit the bottom BAM they started biting BUT while we were fishing the bottom we also had a shark bait out just in case!
So there we were just picking at the tilefish and we kind of forgot about our shark bait TILL BAM the big rod bent over and line started peeling off the reel. We Were Hooked Up!!
Jack jumped in the chair and the fight was on. Jack was doing all he could with this sea monster on the other end but there was no stopping this fish than Larry jumped in to give a hand. Back and forth the fight went on and on but at last they got this 98-inch hammerhead shark to the boat.
WOW what a great fight and a great big shark.
Larry if you guys could send me a couple of the pictures I would love to post them.

King Fish, Black Fin Tuna and HammerHead caught aboard Hooked Up
June 13th, 2012
Today please bare with me because our fishing report notes all got wet and I am doing the best I can to read them. Bare in mind we fish everyday and some times it is tough to remember every tip but I believe we had Bill, Kevin and Sam from parts unknown trolling the reef and landing a couple of kingfish.
Afterwards we did set out our shark baits and did catch a hammerhead shark.
As we got back to the dock we had Serge and his son from Montréal Canada out for a few hours of deep sea fishing and once again trolled the reef and landed our limit of kingfish along with a couple black fin tunas.
Once again if I got some of the names wrong please don't hesitate to e-mail me and I will fix it. Also if any of our anglers today have any pictures of today's trip I would be happy to post them as well.

The biggest fish ever caught aboard Hooked Up caught by Steve and Wyatt
June 11th, 2012
Today we had a farther and son team Steve and his son Wyatt from Wichita Kansas out for a little deep-sea fishing.
Today we went right to fishing for big sharks or sailfish so out went the kites with 3 live baits suspended from them along with a shark bait also suspended from the kites. We also sent shark bait all the way down 350 feet and a last shark bait half way down.
Ok trap set now we need a fish and man watch out what you ask for because you just might get more then you barge for.
All of a sudden a nice hammerhead shark came in on the shark bait that was suspended from the kite. This shark was all over the place trying to zero in on the sent when all of a sudden another hammerhead and this one could have eaten the first one! O no RUT ROW please hurry and eat the bait before the big one gets it!!
RATS the BIG ONE now we are in for it!!
Wyatt jumped in the chair what for I don't know because all he did was to HANG on as this monster took line off the reel as if there was a fright train on the other end.

Finally the sea monster slowed up and Wyatt gained an inch or 2 than back out the line went. O my God we were not going anywhere for quite some time.
Than Steve jumped in the chair to help out a bit and so it went back and forth gain a bit lose a lot one angler than back to the other.

Ok I could go on and on but about an hour or so later we finally had this 11-foot great gray hammerhead shark next to the boat.

There was no sliding this one in for a measurement we measured this one while he was next to the boat.
At first we figured at least 700 pounds but after further looking at this fish and comparing it to others we have killed and weighed in the past we would have to say this fish weighted some where between 8 to 1000 pound!! NO BS biggest fish ever caught aboard the Hooked Up.
WOW what else can I say? Now that's a nice fish!!!
Steve and Wyatt we will never forget this fishing trip and once again thanks soooo much for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

The Family from South Carolina lands big shark aboard Hooked Up
June 10th, 2012
Today we had Scott and Heidi and their son Brandon and daughter Valerie and their grand parents Vicki and Henry from Simpsonville South Carolina out for a few hours of deep sea fishing aboard the Hooked up off the coast of Fort Lauderdale Florida.
We went right to BIG GAME fishing with some live baits on the surface along with some shark baits down deep.
Ok trap was set now all we needed was for some sea monster to come along and take a bite!
And that was just what happened when this big hammerhead shark came along and just like that BAM the fight was on.
25 min later up popped this 91-inch hammerhead shark.

We managed to slide him through the tuna door to get the hooks out and for a couple of quick pictures and than as you can see he swam away in great shape to fight again another day.

To our new friends from South Carolina thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Sharks Sailfish BIG Mahia Mahia and tons a Fun Aboard Hooked Up
June 9th, 2012
Today we had our regular costumer/friends aboard the Hooked Up. We had Mickey and her son Erran from Westin Florida.
Let me start out by saying that Erran is the fisherman in the family and while I've never seen the walls in his house I can assure you they are filled with trophy fish hanging from them. So today we were looking for another kind of fish for Erran and it had to be a nice one.
Today was one of those days big or bust or better-said hero or zero.
So out went the live baits suspended from the kites and down went the shark baits.
Things started out slow with the trap set and the wait was on.
BUT finally after a long wait one of the shark rods bent over Erran jumped in the chair and we were Hooked Up.

At first all Erran all could do was to hang on as this fish just took line at will.
But after a bit the fish settled down and Erran started to slowly gain a little line.

After a good 20 min back and forth tug a war Erran got this 6 and a half-foot shark to the boat.
Mickey and Erran thanks again for always fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.
As we got back to the dock we had our afternoon trip eager to give their luck a shot at some deep-sea fishing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale aboard the Hooked Up.
We had a batcher party for Julian from Hope Sound Florida along with his close friends Jason and Loren from Atlanta Georgia and with Peter from West Palm Beach Florida and Claus also from Hope Sound Florida.
This after noon we went right to kite fishing in 140 feet of water along with a shark bait down on the bottom.
Let me take a second to say that this year has been a real off year for Mahia Mahia but just as we were putting out our first live bait in the water I seen a BIG Mahia Mahia come right up to the back of the boat and ate our first bait in the water right behind the boat. Holly cow we just started putting the baits out and we were already Hooked Up with a 30-pound plus Mahia Mahia. The groom to be jumped in the chair and the fight was on. After about 10 min of Julian fighting this big fish I noticed another smaller Mahia Mahia right behind the one we were connected to.
Captain Greg got a spinning rod and try casting another live bait at the second fish but all at once the line got tangled onto the line we were fighting the big fish on.

We got lucky and Greg untangled the lines and we decided to not mess up a good thing so there was no more casting at the second fish till we had the big one in the boat.
Finally Julian got his fish just close enough for Greg to reach way out and BAM the fish was gaffed and in the boat! What a way to start out the trip!!

We never did get another shot at the second Mahia Mahia but this is a fish story about the big one that did NOT get away.
Ok back to getting the baits out. We did get our kites out with live baits suspended from them along with a couple of shark baits down deep.
Trap Set and now the wait was on. We waited and waited and yes still waiting with no bites.
Than all of a sudden out of nowhere up popped this sailfish and just like that we were Hooked Up again. And once again the Groom to be jumped in the chair.
What a show at first this sail was dancing all over the surface of the waves but soon enough the fish settled down and Julian slowly reeled him to the side of the boat.
We got a couple pictures of this nice 6-foot sailfish next to the boat and Captain Greg reached down and cut the leader as close as possible to the sails mouth.

WOW what a great couple of trips but wait we still had one more trip to do today and this one was from 5:00pm till 1:00 am.

This was a swordfish trip with Larry and his son Kevin and son in law Chris from Austin Texas.
I sure hate to end a great fishing report on a sad note but the fact is while we did have 2 bites both fish fell off with in a second of hitting the bait.
Larry we owe you one.
Thanks again to all of our anglers today for taking the time to fish with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Fishing with the Apodaca family aboard Hooked Up
June 8th, 2012
Today we had one of our regular customers/friends aboard from New Mexico.
We had Leonard and his wife Sam along with their 3 sons Alex, Manny and Sammy.
Today we started out trolling the reef with 2 planner boards running about 45 feet down along with 3 baits skipping across the surface. Trolling the reef was good today with bonitos coming into the boat pretty much one after another along with a couple of kingfish and with Manny catching a Mahia Mahia.
Ok skunk was well out of the box and now it was time to try for the big one.
In came the trolling gear and out went a couple of live baits along with a shark bait set down on the bottom.
At first it was a waiting game BUT then all of a sudden our deep rod with the shark bait on the other end bent over and line started peeling off the reel. Alex jumped in the chair and the fight was on.
Back and forth Alex would gain a little then lose a little this went on for a good 20 min back and forth till at last Alex had this nice 6 foot shark to the side of the boat.

We slid the shark through the tuna door for a quick measurement and a couple of pictures and right back out the door he went to fight again another day.

Hi my name is Taco and I run one of the best charter fishing boats down here in South Florida. WHY? Because I’ve been fishing the waters down here since 1969 and I started at the bottom and worked my way up the ladder. I know what it is like to read a web site and than once you get to boat things are not as you thought they would be. Not here I say it like it is. No surprises. I’ve got a 45 foot Hatteras with a big cock pit. Fully aircondishened and refrigerated. Big comfortable platform.
