Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report
We have been experiencing the beginning of our kingfish season here off Fort Lauderdale over the past couple of weeks. Fish from 5-30lbs. have been fairly common and have been anywhere from 30-200ft. of water. We have been catching them on the kite and flat lines over the past few week and have been caught on all live baits that we have fished.
On east wind the dolphin have been biting well on the reef, especially on east wind days. Most of the fish have been in the 5-10lb. range though we have caught fish up to 20lbs. in the last week on our Ft. Lauderdale charters.
Sailfishing has been slowing down but we have been averaging 1 fish each day this past week. Saturday we fished the One day Miami Billfish tournament and caught 5, so if you are looking for a shot at just sailfish there is still a good shot at sailfish if you are willing to put in your time specifically catch a sail.
On the wrecks we have been catching a good amount of cobias, averaging 1 per trip. These have been good fish up to 45lbs. and have been on the wrecks from 80-150ft. These fish tend to be on the wrecks that have been holding gag grouper as well as bull sharks. The gags gather to spawn, which brings in the bull sharks to eat them and the cobias have been following them.
The hammerheads are still around as well as bull sharks on the wrecks. These fish are a great way to fill the day if some of the other sportfish are slow on a particular day. We have been targeting the bull sharks on the wrecks and have been drawing them to the surface chumming with bonitas.
