Mahi on the Kite

Capt. Mario Cote
November 19, 2013
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

On Sunday morning, a repeat customer that fished with us this summer came back with is dad to show him the excitement of salt water fishing.

With a southeast wind between 15 to 20 knots we left the inlet with pilchards and goggle eyes. We setup in 250' north of Port Everglades and put out a spread of 4 baits: 1 deep gog, 1 deep pilchard and 2 flat lined pilchards. Wind and current combined to push us north and slightly inshore. When we reached 100', we got a hit on the deep gog – I thought for sure it was a nice kingfish – but it turned out to be a mahi. Later the same drift, we added a nice cero mackerel.

Fishing was slow Sunday. We did several more drifts with no luck, so we went deeper, to 600'. With still no luck, came back in to 250' and setup a full spread for a final drift. When we hit 120' on the sounder, both kite baits got slammed and ended our trip with 2 nice mahi!
