Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

We had one of the roughest weather weekends of the year this past weekend. The winds were 25 knots and the seas were 4-6 with an occasional 8-10 footer mixed in. It was rough! Our morning charter on the Mary B III shows up and I walk over to tell them that the ocean is rough and they can reschedule if they want. And who steps out of the car... MLB baseball player and big hitter Manny Ramirez. Too cool! Well they were tough guys and wanted to go fishing so we went. I personally love fishing when the ocean is rough. All the small boats stay home and we have the whole ocean to ourselves. Plus, a lot of fish really bite well when the seas pick up, much better than they do when the seas are flat. Dolphin fish and sailfish particularly like rough sea conditions. Well, the customers were ready to go so we shoved off and went out fishing.

It was as rough as I thought it was going to be. The Mary B III is a big boat, so she handles the seas very well. We went trolling on this trip as it was a sportfishing charter. The fishing was great, lots of bites and the mahi were all over the place. We caught about a dozen mahi-mahi, kept 8 and threw a few back. We also caught a couple bonitos and some small kings. It was a good trip with lots of action. We had a couple big bites (I think one was a wahoo) that spit the hooks so we didn't catch them. Shame, cause I would have really liked to get a picture of Manny with a big game fish. Still it was fun, all the kids caught fish and they got to take some great eating, fresh filets home with them. The dolphin are biting good out there this week. We usually get a good run of dolphin that come through this time of year and it seems like it's happening now. If you want to come out while the mahi-mahi dolphin are biting, this is the week to come.

Thanks for fishing with us Manny and bringing the kids. It was rough out there but it was fun. Good luck to everyone fishing with us this week. I'll sea ya on the water.
