Shark fishing season is here! The big sharks have begun their annual journey northward along our coast. Hammerheads, makos, threshers and more big game sharks have herded together in on a once-per-year migration through our waters. This week, we've caught several extremely large hammerhead sharks, a couple big duskys and a very rare mako shark. Our charters specialize in fishing for sharks and other big game fish. Sharks are our favorite though and shark fishing this time of year makes it look east. Just go out to 300-400 foot of water and set your baits out. Then it's just a waiting game to get the bite. It happens for us more often than not that we get the bite on a big, sometimes huge gameshark.

Sharks bite on top and on bottom. I like to set a couple deep baits down on the bottom. You have to use a 4 pound sinker to keep a 10 pound bonito on the bottom. And then, a couple baits on top. On days with wind, the kites work very well for fishing the surface. On days without wind, I use a balloon to keep the baits up near the surface. With kites, you can see the shark come up to the top of the water with his dorsal fin out of the water, circling the bait like jaws. If we're using the balloon instead, the balloon acts as a giant bobber. If the bobber goes down, you got a bite. It's wasy fishing, just takes time, patience and some luck.

We caught a mako shark the other day. This the 5th mako shark we've caught since January 1. They are very rare for Fort Lauderdale but this year they seem to be biting all over the place. It's great to see the makos coming through like they are this year. Makos are one of the only sharks that jump out of the water and they do incredible jumps. Makos have been known to jump 20-30 feet in the air. There aren't many fish in the sea that have that kind of power. We've also caught lots of big hammerheads, duskies, sand bar, bull and black tip sharks. And we're still at the beginning of shark fishing season. It's going to be an epic shark fishing season this year in south Florida. If you're looking to go after the biggest and most powerful fish in the ocean, the next 3 months is your time to come fishing. Good luck to everyone fishing over the next few weeks. I'll sea ya on the water.
