Reef Fishing In Fort Lauderdale

Capt. Vinnie Sacks
July 25, 2023
Fort Lauderdale - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hello everyone, Capt. Vinnie here. This week once again the reef and snapper fishing has still been fantastic so that is where we will start this report out. Right now in Fort Lauderdale we have been having some very warm temps as of late and fishing seems to be best in the early mornings and later afternoons to beat the heat as they say. Anchor fishing has been a good alternative even with the excessive heat going on right now. We have been doing very very well anchoring up on shallower reefs as deep as 60 feet and chumming, lots of larger yellowtail snapper and a few mutton snapper in the mix. The yellowtail snapper are some of the best eating fish you can catch in the Fort Lauderdale area, When we get to the spot we want to fish we like to start chumming right away and throwing out what we call freebies or free pieces of bait with no hooks in order to bring the fish up from the reef, after doing this process for around 20 min or so then we start to fish. It is important to wait and chum before fishing right away when getting to a spot it makes a serious difference. We have been pretty much getting our snapper limit on days with great conditions to do this type of fishing. As for trolling there has been some nice sized kingfish anode course plenty of bonito right on the outside of the reef, trolling with planners in order to take the baits under the surface is a technique that doesn't fail much. Moving a little deeper there has been some blackfin tuna in the early mornings eating surface baits fished far behind the boat, tuna have great eyesight and are wary of boat noise and tend not to strike lures fished closer to the boat. Bottom fishing out in the deep as been very successful right now as well with great catches of deep water snappers like vermillion and yellowed, although it is not practical to chum these type of snappers due to where they live, a simple double multiple hook rig will suffice and get there attention, small pieces if cut fish like bonito works well and stays on the hook. As far as an offshore report I did venture out on a search for some mahi and we did catch a few nicer sized mahi around 15 miles offshore, that being said they were not as plentiful as I had hoped but it was nice to see a few available, I would imagine in the next few weeks we will being to see them in numbers right off the coast of Fort Lauderdale so be on a lookout for future reports regarding mahi. This week please be sure to check out some of the great photos we have of some recent catches caught board our deep sea fishing charters and remember to follow us on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram @Ybnormalsportfishing for daily fishing content. Coming up we do have some availability for the rest of July as well as for the first few weeks of august, so if your coming down to the fort Lauderdale area and looking to do some deep sea fishing please look us up we would love to show you a great time on the water. Fishing hard the next few days more later.....
